Williams expects to start over Bryant
Wednesday, May 12, 2010 - 06:13 PM EST - 2 Years ago  - NFL - Football - Player Update
Williams expects to start over BryantThe Dallas Morning News reports Cowboys WR Roy E. Williams said Wednesday he plans to start in 2010 even with the addition of rookie WR Dez Bryant . "I don't see it as a competition thing," Williams said. "I see it as us getting better. I know in the back of my mind and the back of his mind he wants to play and the only way he's going to play is to get No. 11 off the field. It's going to be tough to do, but it's going to make us better as a football team." Williams said he's been working hard this offseason, including catching 40-50 passes a week in the throwing sessions with Tony Romo . Williams wants to improve from 2009 when he caught just 38 passes for 586 yards with seven touchdowns. "It's been pretty good," Williams said of his work with Romo. "Lot different than last year as far as completion percentage between me and Tony, so it's been good."

Williams signs tender offerThe Buccaneers announced Wednesday that restricted free agent RB Carnell Williams signed his tender offer. Williams entered the NFL as a first-round pick (fifth overall) of the Buccaneers in the 2005 NFL Draft. He has played in 54 career games with 48 starts totaling 843 rushing attempts for 3,240 yards and 18 touchdowns and 88 receptions for 554 yards and three more scores. In 2005, Williams set a Buccaneers rookie record by rushing for 1,178 yards en route to being named NFL Rookie of the Year. Following two serious knee injuries during the 2007 and 2008 seasons, Williams returned in 2009 to play in all 16 games while leading the team with 823 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. His career rushing total ranks fifth in Buccaneers history.
Cushing keeps rookie award
Wednesday, May 12, 2010 - 04:31 PM EST - 2 Years ago  - NFL - Football - Player Update
Cushing keeps rookie awardTexans LB Brian Cushing has won a revote and will keep The Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award he won in January. The second vote was taken after the league suspended Cushing without pay for four games last week. He tested positive in September, violating the NFL's drug policy. Although Cushing said he took a non-steroid substance, the league still considers it a performance-enhancer. The AP decided to have a revote, with a Wednesday noon deadline. That revote gave Cushing 18 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league. Buffalo safety Jairus Byrd received 13 votes, and Green Bay LB Clay Matthews III got 10. Washington LB Brian Orakpo earned three votes, and St. Louis LB James Laurinaitis got one. In the original balloting, Cushing received 39 votes to six for Byrd, three for Matthews and two for Orakpo.
Sanchez's knee continues to improve
Wednesday, May 12, 2010 - 04:24 PM EST - 2 Years ago  - NFL - Football - Player Update
Sanchez's knee continues to improveJets QB Mark Sanchez said Wednesday his rehabilitation from offseason knee surgery is progressing on schedule but he can't say if he'll be ready to participate in minicamp in June. Sanchez had a procedure on his left knee Feb. 17 to repair the patella ligament. At a news conference to discuss the Jets' and New York Giants' bid for the 2014 Super Bowl, Sanchez said he recently began jogging and playing catch. He has no doubt he'll be ready for training camp in August, but he'll have to wait and see if he can take part in the team's minicamp in mid-June. "That's the goal," he told reporters. "If it's in the cards, great; if not, then we'll just be smart about it and not rush anything and get ready for camp."

This is after visiting with Washington on Wednesday and St. Louis in April. The Rams cleared the former Philadelphia RB to play in 2010 after he passed a physical, which is a key for Westbrook after he dealt with a series of concussions last year.

Johnson 'ready to go' in 2010
Wednesday, May 12, 2010 - 03:27 PM EST - 2 Years ago  - NFL - Football - Player Update
Johnson 'ready to go' in 2010The Detroit News reports Lions WR Calvin Johnson is hoping for a better year in 2010 than he had in 2009. Plagued by injuries for most of last season, Johnson had 347 fewer yards (984) and seven fewer touchdowns (five) than his breakout second-season of 2008 -- 78 catches for 1,331 yards and 12 touchdowns. Johnson said the new additions Detroit made this offseason in Nate Burleson and Tony Scheffler to go with Bryant Johnson should make the Lions passing game more dangerous. "We have a bunch of bigger guys. We have a lot more speed. We have a lot more skilled players out there," Johnson said. "That's why I'm very excited to get going. I'm ready to go right now." The acquisitions of Burleson, Scheffler and rookie RB Jahvid Best should take some of the pressure off Johnson, and the hope is they will force defenses to employ fewer double and triple teams. Johnson saw single coverage only a handful of times last season. Johnson is confident the development of second-year QB Matthew Stafford will go a long way to him having a bounce-back season, also. "His confidence has grown a ton," Johnson said. "He got out there. He has that game experience. He's seen some highs and he's seen some lows. I think he'll be able to come out here this year and give us a good show."
